Color Theory Final

Artist Statement:

The goal of my design was to create a piece that was abstract in nature, but evoked a familiar feeling from its viewer. The original inspiration was of art deco, the colors of the 70’s and Indian art. When playing with color strategies for this design, the colors of turquoise-blue the compliment of the orange-brown hues that I was originally intending to use, transformed the abstractness of this piece to something very familiar to me. Turquoise is used a lot in Indian jewelry and without intention this piece began to remind me of that. My desired outcome was to create something abstract, yet familiar to the viewer.

The use of slightly varying hues of turquoise and orange/brown create contrast along with the design conveying a slight vibration. My challenges when designing this piece were minimal. Changing the background to black created a more interesting visual effect. Also, connecting my zig-zag lines with rounded edges softened and connected the pieces as well as giving them a more natural feel.

I am very happy about the outcome and feel that it accomplished more than I intended from my stated goals. Personally, the 70’s were not my favorite in color scheme, so throwing in the gorgeous colors of turquoise has made this piece more attractive. I took colors and inspiration from things that I normally do not gravitate to so that it would challenge me artistically. It brought more satisfaction from stepping outside of my normal vibrant colors and “whimsical flare” art approach.

This one my teachers second favorite. It was mine as well. At least now I know I have a good eye. I was a little worried about whether she'd approve of them. I don't really consider myself an abstract artist, though I have done a few paintings. Here is what she said, "It has a completely different feel. It is very contemporary and reminiscent of modern painting." YEAH!!!!

Bezold Effect

This is my favorite design out of the thumbnails for my final project. I like the turquoise and the brown, I think I managed to get the feeling I was looking for. It reminds me of jewelry in a way. It was my professors favorite as well, which I am thrilled. Here's what she said, ""This composition has a very rhythmic quality to it. You have used contrast which makes each of these examples striking. Your composition also makes great use of negative space as a design element."

I was supposed to work on some extra credit today and the day is three quarters over! Dang it! Hopefully, I get a good grade on this project at least.

Color Theory Class. Honestly, I am not that impressed with my assignment, but whatever.... I got it done. I wish I had more time to play and create, but there is just not enough time. Between work, school and remodeling the house (oh and fostering kitties) it is just crazy in my world. I had to hire the neighbor kid to mow my lawn. This summer is flying by. I don't mind. It is too hot for me out there. The cool fall breeze is gonna be nice! I can't wait.

COOL! I created my first drawing in Illustrator. I used the pencil tool. This is so different than my painting in Photoshop. Each part is a separate path. It only took me an hour. That's not bad for a beginner! I am feeling a little bit better about Illustrator now. Though, I would love to know if I can shade my painting. We will see!

It's a rainy day here. I have been working on school work most of the afternoon. I am a bit tired of looking at my computer screen, so I am not about to draw in Photoshop today. I kind of feel like being lazy and hanging on the couch. Not sure yet, if that is what I will do.

Yeah! Summer is almost here. The weather has been pretty nice. When it's not raining that is. I start working part time soon. The hours are perfect for a college student.

I also invited mom to come have a craft day with me once a week. Mom started painting. Art runs in the family. Though, mom was like me and had not created in a very long time. I am going to help her with a blog, so she can share her art.

More Free Brushes

I tried some of the free Photoshop brushes that I downloaded. I also played with layers and opacity. These brushes are cool. There's a lot of free downloads out there. I am looking for some really cool fonts. My class this term is Design Applications. I am learning more about the Adobe products and even some computer stuff I did not know. Outside of that I have a bunch of free Adobe Illustrator drawing courses to take through school. I am finding out that, though I am pretty talented, I am clueless about drawing in them! Wish me luck.

It's the 1st day of a new term. I downloaded yet another version of Adobe (CS5 Design Series) I wonder if I can sell my old versions. Worked on my shading techniques this morning. I am not formally trained in fine art, being a cartoonist I am not very good at making my girls look real. Though, I am happy with being a cartoonist, I do admire artists that can do much more. This girl is inspired by a Gritty Jane painting. I am officially addicted to drawing in Photoshop. It can be dangerous because it appeals to my obsessive side. It is just as satisfying as painting, but without the mess. Woohoo!
The best part....the eraser tool! You can't do that with paint and a canvas. These are about as primitive as you can get, but I look forward to learning everything I can.

Drew my first painting in Photoshop. It was so much fun. I used a previous painting of mine, traced the outline with my Wacom Board pencil, then deleted the image, tweaked the lines and painted with the brush and bucket tools. Not bad for my first try. It took me about an hour from start to finish. I could probably do it all day.... This is so addicting!

I was inspired by the hope of a warm sunny springtime this year. We got plenty of sunshine today, but it is still cold. I am thrilled that it is supposed to get up to 40 degrees this weekend. Maybe it will finally melt all the ice in my driveway. I've been feeding the birds the last few days, so that means Tucker can't go outside. I finished a chunky Valentine painting this morning. She is listed on Ebay with a bunch of other Valentine Folk Art Items. Are you tired of winter? I am! Rain, Ice, Snow....I am sick of it all. Today, the cable was down...so it was pretty boring around here. My sister, who lives only a couple minutes from me has no power (and suspected till Sunday) That is a long time. So, today I got a little prepared myself. I have no place to go, so I'd be hunkering down at home. Filled 2 five gallon buckets of water..you know...to flush the toilet if need be. Those simple things we tend to forget about. I prepared some food that I could eat cold if I had to as well. I am praying it won't happen, but at least I will be somewhat prepared!

Here's another large mixed media painting. Why do they call it media. It sounds weird because the only different material I used was fabric. I love this fabric too. I am going to make a matching paper clay doll with this fabric, this week. YES...I am actually gonna do it! I got the pattern out..so that is a good start.

I am ready for spring, are you? I know it is not near, but I am hoping that winter is halfway over, at least!

Yeah! I am so thrilled about this piece. I had this box for over a year I think and I could not figure out what I wanted to paint on it. Oh, now isn't she cute? She really couldn't be any cuter! lol This pink is so awesome. Graffiti pink is what it is called, but with crackle and antique glaze it tones it down just a hair.

It has been a pretty productive day for me. I want to paint some more, but I feel I must take a wee break. My back, neck, shoulder are all sore from shoveling snow all week.

This is my first painting of 2011. I will be placing her on ETSY, this afternoon. I have not been very motivated to paint or create for quite some time. My mother received some painting supplies for Christmas, so I have invited her over to test her skills. LOL Though, she's never really painted before, she is naturally talented as a few is my uncle and my younger sister. It is kinda funny how artistry runs in the family, whether they actually do art or not. I was not raised around anything artistic. Quite the contrary, in fact. A pretty "red-necked"environment to say the least. But somehow I was coloring in the lines at 3 years old and people started telling me "you're gonna be an artist" since then. Maybe it's that...the confirmation from people from a young age. If that is true..well sometimes I would have rather say, "you're gonna be a brain surgeon." lol Are there any "starving brain surgeon's" out there? lol Oh well.

I finally painted something! Yeah. I have a lot to do today. I felt like crap the last couple days. My neck is jacked up because my spinal cord has a joint out of place. It's probably been like that for decades, but now that I am older well it bothers me ALL the time. Stiff and when it is real bad it gives me a headache. I cannot do much when I feel like that and it pretty much sucks. So, when I come off a couple days of that and I feel better, I always feel like I am catching up. Today is that day. I have a few loads of laundry, dishes (always dishes) vacuuming...the list goes on. Once I get that accomplished, I have to head out to the post office. I sure hope I can sew today. I've been putting that off forever.

Cold winter weather has been upon us all week. I have not had a winter like this in over 20 years. I always appreciated the 300 sunny days we had in Denver. Now I understand why they call it a "depressed" state. lol People need sunlight. The ground matches the sky most days here in Ohio. White! Oh well. I guess I should not complain. I like snow. I just don't like driving in it. And I am blessed to NOT have to drive in it day in and day out going to work. I can sit here in my PJ's and make crafts all day if I wish. That's the life I love! I would not have it any other way. :)

This hand painted notebook is so awesome. I love how it turned out. The crackle and antique finish makes it look almost leather like. It's so pretty, I could not dare write in it! lol I am debating on whether to offer it for sale. I know, I do this a lot. I make things I would want to purchase myself, then end up wanting to keep it. LOL Oh well. Maybe that is my way of not feeling bad that I am a "starving artist." Some day's I think about why I even bother...but, that does not last long because I love pretty things and I love making pretty things. Regardless if anyone else cares or not.

This stool was really fun to paint. I actually did it over the summer, but I made some changes to her, today, which I think made her even lovelier than she was before. I have not listed this one because the colors are so pretty and it looks great in my bathroom. I know it is a weird place for a stool, but one thing these stools are good for are propping your feet up while your on the toilet. OMGosh, did I say that out loud? lol I really love snow. I mean, I am a ski fan, but it has not really stopped for days. lol I am not used to this. We'd get dumped on in Denver for a couple days, then it would stop...get sunny..then melt. This snow is slowly accumulating over time. Though, I am happy the roads have not been terribly bad. I am anticipating the days of getting snowed in.

Crackle definitely can tone bright colors down. I used to use black paint and water to antique (not thinking that I should be using burnt umber) If you look closely the it almost looks like leather. I love that.

It's snowing! Looks like winter is finally here. I am literally sitting here in my funny knitted hat that comes over my ears and has a ball on top. I found that when I have a headache, keeping a hat on helps. LOL What? I know, a bit weird...but whatever, right?

I finished my painting. I am fairly happy it turned out as cute as it did. I've never attempted a baby. Of course, here he is a little older. But, I do believe the first Christmas was not originally on the night of the babies birth. It took those wise men a while to get there. lol I would love to use this print on cards for Christmas, but I think it is a bit late for that. Maybe next year. I have not decided yet whether to offer this on Ebay or just donate it. We will see.

This is a little painting, only 4x6. I tell ya, they are a bit hard to do and my brushes are not the greatest, so it was pretty tiedious. I may offer this on Ebay starting at 99 cents, just to keep my name out there. I have not painted today(yet anyway) I was busy getting some feral cat houses and other things situated in my garage. I have a measly little rescue blog and I do what I can for any homeless kitties that are lucky enough to come across my path. I wish I could do more. If I had the means financially, I would already have a cage free sanctuary and adoption facility of my own. Some day....

I bought a few new colors at JoAnn's the other day. This light olive green and the coral I used on the flower and her lips. They are really pretty colors and I am very happy how this turned out. She is available on ETSY.

It's been raining a lot lately. It is weird because ya think we'd be getting snow. I should not complain though. Because I'd rather it rain than snow. I am sure we will have plenty of that soon enough! Time for me to get cleaned up and relax. I am tried!

Instead of working on something new, I decided to do more "tweaking". It really just started with the eyes, but I added more coats of paint to make the colors more vibrant. I have noticed that when I add eye color to these paintings, it gives them more life. So, that is what I have been doing with some of my older paintings.

Tucker is still hanging in the sun room. I bought a space heater for those chilly evenings. There's all glass back there and without that heater it would get pretty cold. I only keep it at mid 50's. It would run all hours if not. But, it is much better than spending those nights outdoors in 30 to 40 degrees. Plus, he stays out of trouble. He is actually quite affectionate, if not a bit rough at times. But, he does kill squirrels, so he's a mighty warrior..lol I try to go either play or pet him at least 5 to 10 times a day. Sometimes it feels like my job..taking care of all these kitties but I love to do it.

I thought I would never get around to painting today. But, as dinner was cooking in the oven, I took the opportunity to work on this. I love the colors. I was a bit apprehensive at first. I mean I doubt I would wear the color "green apple" but it is very pretty up against yellow, black and white. I started my first Frita painting. I have not gotten too far on her, but I think I will probably have her finished tomorrow. It's gotten quite chilly here. I left the house only once, to get the mail. lol What's it gonna be like when the snow comes. I might be cooped up for days.

I finished a box painting this morning, despite feeling a bit under the weather. I am hoping the headache does not come back, but I can still feel remnants of it, so I have to take it easy. I must be getting pretty good at paintings these lovelies, because this was pretty easy, despite my loopy condition. I kept her simple though, so that helped. Regardless of her simplicity, I think she is beautiful.

Not too much time to paint today, but I was able to get this little 4x5 finished. She will be listed on ETSY in the next day or so.
I am not cooking for Thanksgiving this year. Instead I am going to Amish Country with my mother, brother and his kids. It will be nice not to have to clean, prepare food and do dishes that's for sure! I might even be able to do a little painting tomorrow. I already have two sketched out on boxes, so we will see.

I did a quick little update on a box I painted back in May. WOW..Color really brought it to life. I like it SOOOO much better now. The sides have large crackle, which is not easy to see in the photo. Anyway, this is going to my younger sister for her birthday & Christmas. She's one of the unlucky ones to have them fall close together. Not that I don't give her plenty of presents..lol She usually doesn't read my block, so this "should" be a surprise. She'll be getting all sorts of hand made's from me this year.

I just added more cards to Ebay. I wanted to lower the price, but Ebay charges me $1.40 per sale. WHAT? I am going to add these to ETSY as well. If you want to order them straight from me, I can discount the Ebay fees. Now, back to work!

I did a commissioned painting of her yesterday and wanted to make something a little more on the whimsical side. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk around with flowers in your hair like this. I mean, you could if you want to pay to have it put up and pined in place, but then eventually the flowers would droop and well it just would not last. I love the dramatic look this has with the hot pink, black hair and Indian & Turquoise blue. I never like turquoise besides the jewelry, but wow I really love painting with it. Can you tell? It is just very stunning. The eyes are magical. She is available on in my ETSY shop.

I love the quickness of painting on a small canvas. I really enjoy being able to finish something within an hour. It's such great therapy for ADD. lol I am very thrilled that I got to create something today. I spent most of it running errands and just piddling around with Ebay and chatting on Facebook. Facebook is amazing. I can communicate with friends in Japan, Greece and all over the world for free.

Moses & Chin Chin, my two feral Siamese cats, are the inspiration behind this little 5x7 painting. If only I could hold them like this picture. But, I do believe that I will be able to in heaven. I have read the book of Enoch. Enoch is in the old testament, the grandfather of Noah. He was a prophet of the time and walked with God. Enoch did not die, according to the bible, but he was taken up with God. Enoch wrote about how the angels had jobs in heaven ( and on earth) among other things. So if Enoch was right, then I think I will be a kitty caretaker angel. As most would already say that I am. Therefore, one day in heaven I will hold and kiss these two feral kitties. They will understand that I gave them a good home away from the rough outdoors and all will be well.

I am sitting here debating on whether to paint today. I suppose it would be good to take the full day off of creating all together. I am just not sure I am capable. What else is there to do? Clean, watch TV? That sounds so dull. I'll probably puts around online and get inspired, I suppose. I painted this one because my sister said she liked the Raven Hair'd Box. So, I kept the color scheme similar. I kinda like the simplicity of this one. I also like that she can be hung immediately without a frame. I think it's neat that way. I'll be placing this on my sales blog tomorrow. But, today I get to put on the things that did not sell on Ebay. Most of which are going on my gift list to family. I suppose that having ten females on my list is a good thing, cuz everyone's getting something made!

Up before 8 am today. That's a first for some time now. Going to do some chores before I start creating today. The sun is out, once again which makes me happy. It's been unseasonably warm this week and I like it very much! While Denver got 2 inches of snow yesterday..hee hee. I don't miss that. But, I am sure we are going to get some of that here soon enough. Honestly, I am not sure I am ready for the holiday season, yet. It just seems time is going by so fast.

Another one of my ultimate favorite paintings, so far. Just looking at this one brightens my day. This "fall forward" really is screwing me up. I normally would work till much later in the day, but seem to be calling it quits way before I would rather. Then I find myself itching to do something by the time 9pm rolls around. So, here I am posting yet another entry on one of my art blogs. My mind is reeling about all the things I want to work on tomorrow. Will it be like this all winter? Gosh, I hope not. My intention to make Thanksgiving dolls is ruined. No motivation and now Christmas dolls are the hot thing selling. Before I know it Christmas will be here. YIKES. At least the winter goes fast, right? I think I have a new addiction...painting. It is quite addictive for me at least. I choose small canvas's that generally take me about an hour. Once I am finished with one. I am ready to start another. Practice makes perfect is what I am telling myself. I feel blessed to have the time and resources to paint for fun. It won't always be this way, especially if I have to get a job, finish school or start a business, but right now it is playtime. Thank You Lord!

I did something a little different today with some roses. I am happy how it turned out. These little 5x7 paintings are so quick and fun to make. Plus they look quite fabulous framed. This one is going on Ebay tonight, if I can bare to part with her. LOL

I need to post some dollies that I made over the summer along with her. So, I better get to it. Not only does creating art take time, but posting it is very time consuming as well. I rarely look forward to that part. lol

Hand painted notebook

I painted this paper mache notebook the other day. I cracked it, but I think I like it better without the crackle. Part of the reason for crackling was to give it a shinny smooth finish, but I am not entirely thrilled about the imperfect face. What to do... I have not decided to auction it off or give it away as a gift. In the meantime, I am going to need to look for a sealer that is glossy because the painted surface on this book ends up being too flat and a bit like a chalk board to the touch, without sealer.

I am crazy for boxes! lol This one I want to keep! lol At least for a while. I am not in the mood to make dolls. They take so much time and energy versus painting. The days seem so short. Often I find myself sitting in front of the TV at only 6pm thinking it's that time...NOT. At least the weather is nice this week. I am not looking forward to shoveling snow in my long driveway this year!

I love this box. It's a print on wood. I placed this on Ebay last night. Click on the image to go to the auction. Honestly, I will be sad to let this one go. It is my favorite. I like to hang onto my fav's, but seeing how I really have only sold a couple handful of paintings so far...I have to keep trying. I can tell I am getting better and that is the whole point in painting. I have only been painting (not even) 4 months out of my life, really. (and that's only part time) So, I should not feel entirely bad at all. It is a process and learning experience. I have fun and that is all that counts.

I have been making so many things lately I can barely keep up with blogging about it. Then there is all that time I will have to spend getting auctions ready. I am still hashing out in my mind what to offer first because there are so many things! I would consider placing some on ETSY, but it has not been profitable for me...so, I doubt it.

This is a favorite of mine because I love green. Well, I actually am loving teal much more than I ever thought I would really. I think I have grown a deep appreciation of color in general.

It is a gorgeous day, here in Ohio. Dave is being a wonderful husband and cleaning out all the litter boxes for me. I mean washing, not just scooping. Wow...I know what a great guy right?

As far as me, I am painting...again. I will probably do some cleaning around here myself as soon as I post my new creations. As far as these lovelies...I will be placing these three 5x7 paintings on Ebay this week along with some many others that I have been working on.

Dove In The Breeze - Redone

I tweaked a painting I did this summer. I added a crackle to the sides and her hallo. I also repainted her skin and added blue to her eyes. Wow, it made all the difference. This painting is so pretty and I think I like adding color to the angel's eyes now. It really gives them so much more personality. This painting along with the teal box I just did and a few new items (all with a teal theme) will be going up on Ebay this week. If they don't sell, then I suppose they will make great presents..or just something nice to keep because I do love them so much!

I have been painting these paper boxes and am great satisfaction from them. I love the crackle effect. It almost makes it look like aged leather. I bought a few sets of these to paint, so I hope I don't bore you with them. They make great gifts for the holidays and will be added to my gift list for sure.

I am excited about painting some more today...so, I should get going!!

Tucker, the stray cat, got fixed today. So, while he slept this afternoon I created this large painting. I started posting my paintings on Ebay in hopes to start raising money for my kitty rescue adventure. Many of you who know me well know that it is a dream of mine to create a cage free no kill shelter for cats. There is a long road ahead of me when I think about doing this....So, I thought I would try getting inspired by it. All of my profit from my art is now going to this effort. I'll get there someday!
